NYC Tragedy: Man Charged with Strangling His 82-Year-Old Mother

A man is accused of murdering his 82-year-old mother at her Annadale home. Carl Sutera, 59, of Sheldon Avenue in Huguenot, was arrested on Tuesday, barely one day after the funeral of his mother, Rosalie Sutera.

According to individuals close to the investigation, Rosalie was discovered dead on the floor of her Wolcott Avenue home on January 17.

Rosalie was declared dead by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on the scene. The medical examiner was tasked with determining the cause of her death, while the police investigated.

According to Carl Sutera’s criminal complaint, he strangled his mother inside her home on January 17, in the morning and early afternoon. Sutera is charged with second-degree murder, but has pleaded not guilty.

Court Proceedings and Family Background

Carl Sutera was remanded to Rikers Island after his arraignment on Wednesday, and he is set to appear in Criminal Court on Monday.

Sutera, who stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs around 245 pounds, has finally made his case public. Rosalie Sutera, a Brooklyn native, was regarded as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She lost her spouse, Carl, in 2022. Her funeral was held at Holy Child R.C. Church in Eltingville, with burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, as stated in her obituary.

As the case progresses, the medical examiner’s office has yet to reply with additional information.

Carl Sutera’s attorney, Joseph Sorrentino, has claimed that the incident is now being investigated and that he will not make any statements at this time. The tragic nature of the crime has left the community in grief, seeking answers.
