Woman from Wisconsin Dies in Three-Vehicle Crash Near Zion

Investigators say a 55-year-old woman was killed when she struck another car head-on, resulting in a three-vehicle collision close to Zion on Friday morning that also injured another driver.

Around 8:45 a.m. on Friday, the Newport Fire Protection District and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury-involved automobile crash near Route 173 and Kilbourne Road in unincorporated Zion.

Upon arrival, deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office discovered three automobiles that were severely damaged, as stated by Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that a 55-year-old woman from Burlington, Wisconsin, was driving a Nissan Altima on Route 173 in the west. The Nissan was situated roughly half a mile to the west of Kilbourne Road.

According to Covelli, the Nissan’s driver abruptly changed course and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic, straight into the path of another car. The 62-year-old Arlington Heights man was driving an eastbound Hyundai Sonata when the Nissan struck it head-on.

A 27-year-old Chicago woman operating an eastbound Tesla Y made an effort to avoid the incident, according to Covelli. The Tesla sustained damage when it struck an embankment by the side of the road.

According to Covelli, the Nissan’s unbuckled driver was pronounced dead at the scene. With only minor wounds, the Hyundai driver was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The Tesla driver was unharmed.

The victim, whose identity is being kept private, will have an autopsy scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Collision Investigations Team is still looking into the collision.
