New York Student Murdered by Roommate While Studying Abroad

The University of Hull in England claimed the life of a 19-year-old New York student pursuing a career in special education when his roommate fatally stabbed him, according to authorities.

Humberside Police reported that Sachin Hawkins passed away on Wednesday while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Syed Hussain-Kazi, Hawkins’ 24-year-old roommate, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday. Hussain-Kazi escaped their shared home following the incident, according to the police, and was apprehended following a protracted search.

Detective Chief Inspector Jayne Goodens stated in a statement that:

“This is thought to be an isolated incident between two people, believed to be known to each other, that took place inside a property,” “We do not believe there to be any wider risk to the public.”

After graduating from Long Island’s Freeport High School, Hawkins relocated to England in 2022 to attend the University of Hull, his mother told NBC New York.

“He wanted to make everyone proud and was a role model for the younger generation,” said his mother. “Sachin was loved by everyone.”

Hussain-Kazi and Hawkins were friends, according to Hawkins’ mother. Days prior to her son’s passing, she claimed to have spoken over the phone with her roommate.

“What triggered it? That’s the question we’re all asking. Why Sachin?” his mother said. “None of his friends, his other friends, who were there, no one knows.”
