Here’s How a Single Mom Again Got Access to $600 in Unemployment Benefits

Unemployment benefits, also called unemployment insurance, unemployment payment, unemployment compensation, or simply unemployment, are payments made by authorized bodies to unemployed people.

Nicole Finn, a single mother, was not able to claim her unemployment benefits for months, so she turned to the media for help.

In an interview with News 6, Nicole said: “I have children to care for, I’m working two part-time jobs, a day job and night job, and it’s still just not enough.”

Soon enough Make Ends Meet gathered Finn’s DEO account information and sent it the reemployment team for review. It is one of hundreds of DEO accounts News 6 has sent to Tallahassee over the last three months.

DEO account was updated to make four of the seven weeks available to claim, issuing roughly $664 to her bank account.

“I almost fell out of my chair,” the grateful single mom said. “I log in, look at it and I was blinking thinking, ‘Is this a dream, is this real?’ This is truly a blessing.”

On March 11, 2021, the President signed into law the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) which extends some federal unemployment programs authorized by the CARES Act, including Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC).

PEUC has been extended by 29 weeks, and now provides a maximum of 53 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits to eligible individuals. Claimants may continue to receive PEUC through benefit week ending September 4, 2021, or until their benefits are exhausted, whichever comes first.

Claimants who exhausted PEUC and are already receiving Extended Benefits (EB) must exhaust EB before returning to PEUC.

According to the DEO, an estimated 97.9% of all eligible benefits requested prior to Oct. 15, 2021, for state Reemployment Assistance, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) have been paid to claimants.

The deadline for filing weekly claims online for PEUC is September 17, 2021, after which claimants must contact the UI Call Center at (877) 600-2722 for assistance filing a claim.

PEUC claimants who have exhausted or are near exhaustion should not immediately apply for Extended Benefits (EB), as PEUC extension implementation is currently in progress following the signing of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. These claimants should continue to file weekly certifications for PEUC.
