The United States Department of Agriculture reported on Thursday that more than 28,000 pounds of ground beef products had been recalled because they may have been contaminated with E. coli.

Affected beef products include beef sold at Walmart, Kroger (which owns Smith’s), WinCo Foods, and Albertson’s grocers, as well as beef products sent to retail outlets in the following states: Utah; Arizona; California; Nevada; Oregon; Washington; and Wyoming.

Officials from the organization classified the recall as Class I, indicating that the product poses a “high or medium risk” of causing health problems and that there is a “reasonable possibility” that using the product may have negative repercussions.

Symptoms of consuming E. coli include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and stomach pains 2–8 days (3–4 days on average) after being exposed to the bacteria, according to USDA officials.

They advised anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek emergency medical attention right away, according to the experts.

The sample was acquired from a third-party lab for testing, and the sample tested positive for the bacteria E. coli. The raw ground beef was distributed by Interstate Meat Dist. Inc., a Clackamas, Ore., institution, which is recalling the product.

The beef items that have been recalled were made on December 20, 2021.
