Congressman Paul Gosar cosponsors H.R. 140, or the Birthright Citizenship Act which is “calling on the President to resume the interpretation of section 1 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution as originally intended and applied as law for a century” to stop “illegal immigration”.
“Besides Canada, the United States is the only other industrialized country that grants automatic citizenship to all children born in this country. That means children born to illegal immigrant parents in the United States are guaranteed U.S. Citizenship,” the congressman says.
“This includes tourists passing through America. A pregnant tourist that gives birth here is giving birth to a “citizen.” Again, no other country has such a nonsensical law. Trust me.”
He adds: “Our policy on this is silly and harmful. Automatic citizenship has long served as an incentive for illegal immigration.
With an estimated two million illegal immigrants pouring across our southern border this year, including pregnant mothers, it is well past time that we end the misguided policy of birthright citizenship.”

The Birthright Citizenship Act would restrict the granting of automatic citizenship to newborns who have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. The legislation would also allow the granting of automatic citizenship to newborns who have at least one parent who is an alien serving the armed forces.
The resolution of the bill reads:
Resolved, That House of Representatives—
(1) calls upon the Government of the United States to return to the proper, original, and intended interpretation of section 1 of the 14th Amendment, taking into account the jurisdiction clause;
(2) disapproves of birthright citizenship and intends to pursue legislative measures if necessary to ensure the practice is appropriately ended;
(3) supports the directives of the Trump Administration to properly interpret section 1 of the 14th Amendment and, if necessary, seek judicial clarification as to the intent of the language of the amendment; and
(4) will seek, if necessary, a legislative solution to end birthright citizenship.
