At A Fundraising Event, Joe Biden Criticizes Elon Musk’S Acquisition Of Twitter As “Sending And Spewing Lies”
At a charity event in Chicago on Friday, President Joe Biden broke his silence regarding Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Claiming that the social media site “spews lies all the time over the world.”
According to Bloomberg, the remarks came as Biden warned donors about the long-term consequences of the upcoming midterm elections.
“What are we all worried about now? Elon Musk goes out and buys a company that spreads lies worldwide. “According to multiple reports, Biden stated.
He continued: “There are no more editors. There aren’t any editors. How can we expect children to understand what is at stake?”
According to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the Biden administration supports social media platforms taking steps to “reduce hate speech and misinformation.”
“That belief applies to Twitter, Facebook, and any other social media platform where users can spread misinformation,” Jean Pierre explained.
Musk, a self-described “free-speech absolutist,” has promised to make the social platform similar to a digital town square. What adheres to first amendment speech protections? Since the $44 billion acquisition, hate speech on the platform has increased, and significant advertisers have suspended ads on Twitter due to concerns about content moderation.
Staff previously in charge of content moderation and political figure verification have been fired since the acquisition was completed, as Musk makes progress on his pledge to investors to reduce the platform’s workforce by 75%.
Elon Musk and Twitter representatives did not respond immediately to Insider’s request for comment.
