Why East Lycoming Residents Say No to Masks at School Board Meeting? Read Full News

Even with COVID-19 cases perpetually rising across the nation and the area now being in the high level for COVID-19 transmissions, some parents and residents of Lycoming County still are against mandatory mask wearing in the district.

According to one resident, masks “are dangerous and wrong”– saying that wearing masks may raise the amount of carbon dioxide inhaled by an individual wearing them. However, there is no scientific evidence proving that this claim is true. Others claim children could suffer negative psychological effects from wearing masks, therefore calling to keep masks off of children.

Scientific studies have long confirmed that the COVID-19 virus is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets that are exhaled when they cough, sneeze, sing, talk or breathe which could be inhaled by other people. Despite being proven to be effective in reducing the risk of transmitting these infectious droplets, masks are still a matter of great discussion and debate among districts.

The board also discussed other matters, including the approval of a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of bonds for certain school buildings.

William Knapsack was also appointed as temporary principal at Ashkar Elementary School. Five new hirings, including a high school secretary and an assistant varsity football coach were also deliberated and approved during the meeting.

East Lycoming residents may expect the next board meeting on Tuesday, September 14, at 7 PM.
