Emergency Lifted in Ventura County After Wind-driven Fire Burns 2,700 Acres
On Sunday, firefighters kept fighting a wind-driven brush fire in Ventura County that had burned nearly 3,000 acres at one point. As they made progress, the evacuation orders were lifted.
A county report says the South Fire started early Saturday morning near the top of the slope on South Mountain in the Somis area. At first, the fire was thought to be about 4 acres, but within hours, it had grown to hundreds of acres.
After almost 24 hours, the Ventura County Fire Department said the fire had grown to 2,944 acres and was only 15% contained.
In the afternoon report, the government said that crews had contained the fire to 50% of its original size and that it had reduced to 2,700 acres.
The fire department said on social media, “Work will continue all night and for the next three days to make sure this fire is out.” “The cause is under investigation and there have been no reported injuries.”
The workers attacked the fire from both the air and the ground because the strong winds were likely making the flames worse.
Some places were given evacuation orders when the fire was at its worst, but by Sunday, they had been lifted or changed.
