I-5 Reopens In Olympia After Semi-Truck Crashes

After being shut down for many hours due to an incident involving a semi-truck, northbound Interstate 5 near Olympia reopened on Tuesday morning.

On Monday night at about 10:40 p.m., the collision occurred close to Custer Way at milepost 103.

According to a note from the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the vehicle rolled over when it was moving northbound in the first lane and collided with a barrier on the left side of the road. According to WSP, the cause is thought to be speed that was too high for the circumstances.

No harm came to the 62-year-old truck driver. The truck blocked all routes traveling north. Debris had blocked the southbound lanes.

NB and SB I-5 in Olympia remain closed for this incident. Traffic is being detoured to SR-101 in both directions. I-5 was shut down in both directions for about nine hours while the Department of Ecology looked into whether the involved semi-truck had spilled any corrosive substances on the road.

I-5 North would be reopened as soon as the semi-truck was removed from the road, according to Trooper John Dattilo, who stated that the collision was no longer a HAZMAT situation at roughly 4:40 a.m. Around eight in the morning, the interstate reopened.

Between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., southbound I-5 reopened.
