Shohei Ohtani is now married. On Tuesday morning, the two-time MLB MVP astonished supporters by revealing that he has married a woman from Japan who is “very special” to him. Ohtani, 29, who is known for his privacy, did not reveal the identity of his wife.
“To all my friends and fans throughout , I have an announcement to make: Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married,” Ohtani said in the caption of his Instagram post.
He went on to say, “I am excited for what is come and thank you for your support.”

In addition to his English caption, Ohtani included a Japanese greeting for his supporters and the press, as well as a photo of his dog, Decoy. According to a translation by the Associated Press and CNN, the Los Angeles Dodgers player requested that the media not contact his family or friends to learn more about his new wife.
Ohtani also stated that he would provide more information in an upcoming interview, according to the publications.
“The season is approaching, I am pleased to announce to you that I have gotten married,” Ohtani wrote in Japanese, according to CNN.
“We are still young and [there are] many things we don’t know yet, but we hope you will warmly watch over us,” he went on to say. “We hope that the two of us (and one dog) will work together to support each other and move forward alongside with our fans.”
Ohtani revealed in December that he was leaving the Los Angeles Angels to join the Dodgers on a 10-year agreement. Although he is recognized as a two-way player, the reigning MVP will not throw this season due to elbow surgery. He’s projected to return to pitching in 2025.
