The Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are looking into the fatal traffic crash that happened in the morning on Route 173 (Rosecrans Road) near Kilbourne Road in Newport Township, near Zion.

At about 8:45 a.m. on Friday, November 17, 2023, Newport Township firefighters, paramedics, and deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to a traffic collision with injuries on Route 173 west of Kilbourne Road in Newport Township.

When Lake County Sheriff’s deputies got there, they saw three seriously damaged cars. More ambulances were sent out after they overheard radio chatter on the Lake County Sheriff’s radio discussion group.

Lake County IL Sheriff’s Office shared a post on Facebook:

The Nissan’s unbuckled driver was declared dead at the site of the accident. With only minor wounds, the driver of a Hyundai was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Although the Tesla driver was unharmed, he declined paramedics’ attempts to treat him and take him to the hospital.

Based on preliminary findings, a 68-year-old Burlington, Wisconsin resident was operating a Nissan Altima westbound on Route 173, about 0.5 miles west of Kilbourne Road. For some reason, the driver of the Nissan drove into the eastbound lanes of traffic, straight into the path of a 62-year-old Arlington Heights resident driving an eastbound Hyundai Sonata.

The Nissan and Hyundai hit each other hard. Driving eastward in a Tesla Y, the 27-year-old Chicagoan woman attempted to evade the crash by slamming into an embankment on the side of the road, but this caused damage to the Tesla.

An autopsy is being scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Collision Investigations Team is still looking into the collision. With shoulders of reasonable width and a painted center double line, Route 173 is a two-way rural route.

According to Google Maps Street View photos taken in August 2023, the speed limit is 50 mph. Although there isn’t a curve close to the crash scene, there is a little rise in the road there that might make it difficult to see oncoming vehicles entirely or in part.

Along the road, there are also several crests and troughs. East of Route 41, adjacent to the Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve, between Kilbourne Road and 21st Street, Route 173 was closed.
