COVID-19: Why Fully Vaccinated Are Getting Hospitalised?

16

Presently, it looks like there has been an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations even though they are fully vaccinated.

This is particularly evident in Israel, where there are more vaccinated than unvaccinated people in hospitals.

It may be alarming to hear there are more vaccinated people than unvaccinated people in hospitals – but it’s actually a good thing.

The bottom line is, no vaccine is totally perfect and of course, you can still get sick. There is also a chance that you will need hospital care even though you are fully vaccinated.

It all boils down to the size of the vaccinated population.

To understand why this happens, we need to look at vaccine efficacy within the whole population, not just the people in the hospital.

We know that COVID-19 vaccines reduce your chances of serious illness by around 80%.

In trials, 80% vaccine efficacy means that 80% of people who contracted COVID-19 were unvaccinated, and 20% were vaccinated.

If you’re looking at a population of 100 people, 50 vaccinated and 50 unvaccinated. Of these, 40 people had COVID-19.

If we look at the ratios in this hypothetical example, we see that 8/40 infected people are vaccinated and 32/40 are unvaccinated. It’s clear to see that the vaccinated people fared better – in fact, that would be a vaccine efficacy of 80% (1–8/40 = 80%).

However, the ratios change as vaccination rates increase – they are no longer even.

Say, instead, that there are 80 vaccinated people of our hypothetical population of 100 and only 20 unvaccinated. In this scenario, there are 29 people with COVID-19.

Let’s zoom in – consider that 16/29 people are vaccinated, but only 13 are unvaccinated. It seems like more vaccinated people are ending up with the virus, but that number is out of context.

It also means that the percentage of vaccinated sick people (16/80 = 20%) is much lower than the percentage of unvaccinated sick people (13/20 = 65%).

This is the same principle that occurs as Australia’s vaccinated population increases. With higher vaccination rates, the ratio of vaccinated to unvaccinated people in hospitals will become closer, but the rate of seriously ill people in the whole population will decrease.

Update: With the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines fading away, FDA has approved booster shots for the individuals who fall under this criteria:

  • Individuals 65 years of age and older;
  • Individuals 18 through 64 years of age at high risk of severe COVID-19; and
  • Individuals 18 through 64 years of age whose frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 puts them at high risk of serious complications of COVID-19 including severe COVID-19.

P.S. This approval is valid only for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine in the US.

Based on these criteria, if you’re eligible to receive the Pfizer booster shot, would you go ahead and get it?

How many newly infected people had natural immunity?
We all know vaccinated people can have breakthrough infections but nothing is said about natural immunity being re infected with covid

Thank God or Nature that we have our immunity system. I am a medical professional and know that doctors cash in and take credit for our own immunity and ability to heal.

  3. Slavica Sikora says

It is not that the vaccines reduce a chance to get sick from covid, it is that our own immunity is protecting us. When I am shown that the vaccine can be more potent than my own immunity then I will take it, but not before. For now Pfizer is only 42% effective, and that again doesnt mean anything, our immunity is what counts. Sick and weak with compromised health would succumb to any other virus not just covid, Amen !

Texas issue deeply confirms Ron Whites line “you can’t fix stupid” sadly the “whole head hood” worn there is not for COVID but a symbol of the statement. As for unemployment I believe it was needed and still has a strong need for many families that no longer have choices for work. No one can feed a family working at fast food or many low paying jobs. They no longer guarantee posted work hours or agree to provide dependable hours. Workers may have a required schedule to work and have to show up as scheduled but after they arrive can be sent home because it’s felt they are not needed. Why call it a job if you have no set schedule to work that is dependable. I have paid into unemployment over 40 years and now I don’t qualify and the work offered is far below my skill level with no benefits none. How can anyone call that a job?

It makes perfect sense we are at the worst level and more cases and deaths than the first time it is ridiculous to stop pua benefits people are terrified to actually leave and their homes and join the community because of what we hear from the news,What else should people think you have so many different shots and they still don’t make you inmune to this outrageous virus that is yet to still be controlled

  6. Jan Abney says

That doesn’t explain away the fact that there are still more vaccinated people in the hospital with covid.

  7. Wanda says

Her double talk reminded me of the old west snake oil salesman. The fact remains most people dying of Covid has been vaccinated. Don’t take my word for it check around your own neighborhood or your family for that matter. There is no way to explain that away with your double talk lady.

No mention of one’s unvaxxed that are not coming down agin with a second round of Covid?? That’s because it’s such a small amount that it does happen too. Now ones vaxxed are seeing high numbers of reinfection cases, that’s because a loss of natural immunity is gone. Sad part many don’t realize that have dismantled there natural immune system for good. A act that will later on cause harm when something beside Covid infections come out & no immune left system to fight off strange virus!

Yes they really do we need the help this is cray the way we are living without funds

  10. Frye says

Seriously you spent the whole time talking about % and skipped the whole point. 80% is still .005% chances. Let’s talk about how someone who is full 3 shots in gets a virus? Lets talk about Israel who is mostly jabbed iss till seeing people get sick and die?? If we are all jabbed it won’t stop the virus from mutating

  11. Eric says

How do you start an article saying that more people are now hospitalized that are vaccinated, and then end it saying how good that is??

I realize the ratios change for people contracting the virus of vax/unvax, but you are talking about hospitalized people…I thought those with the vax were keeping OUT of hospitals??

  12. Drusilla Heffington says

What about people that are in the process of fighting to get SSI/Disability and can not work at all?
We have no income at all to pay our bills, such as our rent for our housing.
Biden is only cutting Stimulus Checks for families with children, But what about me who is fighting for SSI/Disability, and can not work?

  13. Anthony says

I choose to listen to the people who have spent their entire lives studying virus and vaccines not the local YouTuber. I have been vaccinated and want the booster as soon as they will let me. You know why there aren’t a bunch of us gen x and millennials walking around with smallpox vaccine marks right? Because it worked!

  14. Troy Wilkinson says

Vaccine efficacy is down to 46% now so this article is out of date. The latest science tells us that the vaccine is causing the variants as it only simulates the spiking protein of the virus, the virus has a million opportunities to find a work around (or mutate) per vaccinated person. If only longer term research was done. Oh well.
