What Do I Need to Apply for Social Security and How Long Does It Take to Receive Benefits?

Social Security is the main source of retirement and disability benefits for people over the age of 65. Retiring, survivor, and disability are the three types of benefits available. Applying may seem daunting at first, but it can go smoothly if you prepare for it.

How to apply for Social Security and what do you need to do?

If you give incorrect information on your application, it delays the Social Security Administration from processing your application and starting benefits. The timing does vary. The Social Security Administration will not process your application and start benefits if you provide inaccurate information.

At times, the wait time can be prolonged if the Social Security Administration requires additional or new information from you. The SSA also receives a huge number of new applications each day, so at times there may be longer waits than expected.

Besides a birth certificate and proof of citizenship, you will need a Social Security number, W-2 forms, and tax returns to apply.

Those applying for disability benefits must show a disability report and medical evidence (medical records or lab results) of the disability.
