Moderna, which manufactures one of the approved vaccines in the US, says its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children aged five to 11, and the company will submit data from recent clinical trials to global regulators.
Conversations about COVID-19 vaccines among children has picked up in recent days, with both Dr Anthony Fauci and former U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner and current Pfizer board member Scott Gottlieb both said over the weekend they expect the jabs to be available to young children in the near future.

As of now the FDA has not yet announced a decision on Moderna’s vaccine for youths ages 12 through 17. Moderna submitted results from that study in June.
A panel of FDA advisers will vote this week on whether to authorize the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in children 5 to 11.

People who are to take the Moderna vaccine can take note of the subsequent side effects it might present. Side effects that have been reported with the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine include:
- Injection site reactions: pain, tenderness and swelling of the lymph nodes in the same arm of the injection, swelling (hardness), and redness
- General side effects: fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, chills, nausea and vomiting, and fever
A side effect that have been reported during post‑authorization use of the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine include severe allergic reactions.
There is a remote chance that the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine could cause a severe allergic reaction. A severe allergic reaction would usually occur within a few minutes to one hour after getting a dose of the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine.

These may not be all the possible side effects of the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine. Serious and unexpected side effects may occur. The Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine is still being studied in clinical trials.
In clinical trials, approximately 15,400 individuals 18 years of age and older have received at least 1 dose of the Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine.
In the largest trial, about 25% of trial participants were 65 years of age and older. About 21% were Hispanic or Latino and 10% were Black.

According to the CDC, as of June 1, 2021, more than 124 million doses of Moderna COVID‑19 Vaccine have been administered in the US, and 54 million people have received the full 2‑dose series.
