Two North Carolina Cities are Among the 15 Fastest-Growing Homicide Rates in the Country

Two cities in the state of North Carolina have among the highest rates of homicide growth in the United States.

The number of murders has gone up by almost 10% on average in the 50 largest cities in the United States.

The order of the cities is based on how much weight each of these three factors has:

From July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022, the homicide rate per 100,000 people will be 50.

25% for the months of July through September, 2021 and 2022.

From July 2020 to September 2022, there will be a change of 25 percentage points in the number of murders.

Three major cities in the state of North Carolina are among the top 30 on this list of 50.

Durham, North Carolina: #26

Durham’s rankings in the three weighted factors

Of the three North Carolina cities included, Durham is the lowest on the list, coming in at number 26.

There were 3.26 homicides for every 100,000 residents of Durham during that time period, giving the city a homicide rate of 3.26 per 100,000.

Durham’s homicide rate decreased when compared to the same months in 2021, but increased when compared to the previous year.

Charlotte, North Carolina: #15

Charlotte’s rankings in the three weighted factors

The next city in the rankings for increasing homicide rates is Charlotte, which has climbed into the top 15.

3.78 homicides per 100,000 residents in Charlotte during those months, or 3.78 murders per 100,000 residents overall.

In contrast to Durham, Charlotte’s murder rate has gone up steadily over the last two years.

From 2022 to 2021, Charlotte had one of the five biggest jumps in the number of murders in the country.

Raleigh, North Carolina: #14

Raleigh’s rankings in the three weighted factors

Raleigh is the city in North Carolina with the fourteenth-highest homicide rate.

The tragic mass shooting that happened in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 13 is not on this list.

The homicide per capita in Raleigh is 3.19, indicating that there were 3.19 murders per 100,000 residents in Raleigh during those months.

In both 2021 and 2020, Raleigh’s change in homicides ranks among the top ten in the nation.
