Two Suspects Arrested In 2021 North Lake Tahoe Murder

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, two suspects in a m*rder and attempted m*rder that happened in North Lake Tahoe in 2021 have been detained in Nevada after a two-year search by local and federal law enforcement organizations.

In connection with the m*rder of Robert Gary Spohr, 70, and the attempted m*rder of his wife, Wendy Wood, 68, in their Homewood home, Danny Serafini, 49, and Samantha Scott, 33, were detained on Friday morning in Nevada.

With aid from sheriff’s office investigators, the U.S. Marshals, the Winnemucca Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Serafini was taken into jail in Winnemucca, Nevada, and Scott was apprehended in Las Vegas.

The Murder of Robert Gary Spohr and Attempted Murder of Wendy Wood

Deputies responded to a 911 call made from the couple’s North Lake Tahoe residence on June 5, 2021, but they were unable to make out anyone on the other end of the line.

Upon entering the house, Spohr was discovered shot once in the head and dead, while Wood was discovered shot once in the head but still alive and unresponsive.

She was taken immediately to the intensive care unit, where she recovered from her wounds. Uncertainty surrounds the cause of her death, which occurred a year after the injuries she endured in June.

Residents of the Homewood area close to the residence of Robert Spohr and Wendy Wood described the attck as unexpected.

“It’s like something out of a movie. You don’t expect to hear something like that in this kind of area,” Van Pittius said in June 2021. “You feel safe. You constantly have kids and families walking or bicycling around and then this happens.”

Suspect Information and Surveillance Video

Video surveillance from a camera along West Lake Boulevard provided authorities with the only early visual evidence regarding the suspects.

A figure with a hood, a face mask, and a bag can be seen entering the house on the footage a few hours prior to the attck.

Adrienne Spohr, the couple’s daughter, announced a $150,000 reward at a news conference in February 2022 for anyone with information that would help identify or apprehend the suspected gunman.

“Tough to put a price on anything like this because this is my father, this is the man I loved and my mother’s life has been shattered by this. We wanted to put a reward out from the minute it happened, but in talking with the Placer County sheriff, we also wanted to give them the opportunity to go through all the evidence that they had before announcing a reward,” Spohr said in February 2022.

Former Major League Baseball player Serafini was raised in San Mateo and attended high school in San Francisco. He was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the 26th overall choice in the first round of the 1992 draft as a pitcher.
