Tennessee Deputy Missing After River Plunge While Transporting Detainee

A terrifying incident occurred overnight in East Tennessee when Deputy Robert “R.J.” Leonard of the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office went missing in mysterious circumstances.

The rookie cop was on duty Wednesday night (Feb. 14, 2024) and responded to a disturbance complaint on the Highway 60 bridge near the Birchwood Community.

Reports differed on the nature of the disturbance, with some claiming a guy jumped into and out of traffic. At the same time, another indicated a suspected argument between a man and a woman on the bridge.

District Attorney General Russell Johnson clarified the timing of events, stating that Leonard arrived at the site around 9:48 p.m.

However, communication issues hampered the deputy’s updates, with weak cell phone and radio access compounding the problem.

According to voice analysis techniques, Leonard’s last communication occurred at 10:03 p.m. with a cryptic remark of “water.” Simultaneously, his wife received a quick text message with the word “arrest,” which added to the mystery.

Intensive Search Efforts Yield Grim Discovery

Concerns grew when Leonard failed to check in as part of the standard practice for deputies and cops on duty. In response, surrounding authorities mobilized and launched an extensive search effort.

Given the proximity of the disturbance to the Tennessee River, the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency has conducted a visual sweep of the water.

Additionally, Leonard’s phone signal revealed a location near the river, prompting further investigation.

Unfortunately, Thursday afternoon came a somber confirmation: Leonard’s patrol car was discovered buried in the river, nose in, upside down, and wheels up.

The inmate Leonard had been transporting was discovered in the backseat, but her name remains unknown. Despite the vehicle’s position and condition, Leonard was not inside, raising further concerns about his safety.
