Texas Aims to Escalate Enforcement at the Border by Sending Military Armored Personnel Carriers There

Days after invoking an “invasion” clause of both the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Constitution to combat ongoing and overwhelming illegal immigration in the state, Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that armored personnel carriers will soon be added to his border mission as he steps up enforcement.

The Texas Military Department issued the directive as part of Operation Lone Star. According to the article, the National Guard plans to send 10 M113 armored personnel carriers to the border soon.

State officials will determine 10 locations along the southern border and train 50 soldiers to operate the APCs, which are small tracked vehicles designed to carry infantry troops in combat zones alongside tanks.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that these measures “are part of a larger strategy to use every available tool to fight back against the record-breaking level of illegal immigration.”  Abbott ordered the National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to begin Operation Lone Star in March 2021 to crack down on border crime and illegal immigration.

He has also bused thousands of illegal immigrants to sanctuary communities to draw attention to the border in the face of the federal government’s weak response to unprecedented amounts of illegal immigration.
