Tables Turn Quickly as CIA Chief and Taliban Leader Meet Up

Amidst controversy and chaos surrounding the fall of Afghanistan and the withdrawal of US forces from the state, tables seem to turn for CIA director William Burns who reportedly met up with Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Barada, who the CIA previously incapacitated in 2019 and whose organization was targeted by the US in paramilitary operations.

Details of their meeting have been kept under wraps, with confirmation coming from sources who did not want to disclose any more confirmation as the matter was highly classified.

Even then, this meeting unsurprisingly presents great concern especially for the people in Afghanistan and what plans Burns and Barada may have committed to pursuing.

Despite the Taliban’s promise to restore security and peace in Afghanistan, human rights defenders say otherwise.

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet claims that there have been multiple reports of executions, abuse faced by women under Taliban rule, child indoctrination, and violent repression of dissent.

“I urge this council to take bold and vigorous action, commensurate with the gravity of this crisis, by establishing a dedicated mechanism to closely monitor the evolving human rights situation in Afghanistan,” she notes, banking on the possibility of a progressive inquiry or research mission to find out the real situation of Afghans on the ground.

Despite supports from other human rights watchdogs, it seems as though any effort to quell all kinds of violence in Afghanistan under Taliban rule would be futile without widespread support and aid.

As of now, human rights violations continue to persist within the country, with thousands of their countrymen as well as overseas workers from other countries hoping to leave Afghanistan as soon and as safely as possible.

People can only hope the CIA’s meeting with the Taliban reached a compromise that would protect and benefit the people and prevent any more violence and harm.
