In a 41-year-old cold case in rural Jackson County, Indiana State Police announced an arrest on Tuesday.
Ronald Anderson, 61, of Seymour, was taken into custody by Indiana State Police-Versailles Post detectives on October 31 for his suspected involvement in the murder of Clifford Smith, 24, on October 31, 1982, which was precisely 41 years ago.
Smith’s body was discovered, according to ISP, on December 1, 1982, in an area north of Seymour in Rockford, Indiana, along the White River, close to County Roads 700 East and 800 North.
Smith was reported missing on November 4, 1982, according to ISP. Smith died, according to investigators, from a gunshot wound to the head.
Detectives from the ISP looked into Smith’s death in 1982 and the years that followed, but no one was taken into custody.
ISP claims that after Sgt. Kip Main started looking into the matter in September 2015, and it was found that Anderson, Smith, and other individuals were in a house on East 13th Street on October 30, 1982.
Investigators said that Anderson took a shotgun from the house, loaded it, and drove Smith and Anderson out of the house. After Smith and Anderson left the house that evening, according to the ISP, Smith was not seen alive.

According to ISP, Anderson went back to the house on 13th Street with the shotgun and went back to the crime scene shortly after the murder to cover up any possible evidence.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Anderson as a consequence of the inquiry.
Without any problems, detectives picked up Anderson at his east Seymour house and then brought him to the Jackson County Jail.
Online court records show that no date has been scheduled for the initial hearing.
