It began in November 2007, when he was at home in Miami during a botched burglary attempt. Five men from Fort Myers broke into his house to steal cash, unaware that the NFL star was recovering from a knee injury rather than playing in a Redskins game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of the suspects claimed to have been shot after confronting them at his bedroom door with a machete.
Taylor’s fiancée, Jackie Garcia Haley, and their 18-month-old daughter were also present but were not injured. Sean Taylor passed away due to a gunshot wound to the upper leg, and suffering from a severed femoral artery caused extensive blood loss. When taken to the hospital, he passed away 24 hours later in one of the worst tragedies.

Four men were arrested days after Sean Taylor’s death: Venjah K. Hunte, Eric Rivera, Jason Scott Mitchell, and Charles Kendrick Lee Wardlow. According to the police, more than one person confessed to the crime. All four men face life in prison if convicted of felony second-degree murder, armed burglary, and home invasion robbery with a firearm.
In May 2008, a fifth suspect, Timothy Brown, 16, was charged with first-degree murder and burglary, which led to the elevation of all murder charges to first-degree murder. So,
Who assassinated Sean Taylor?
Rivera, the shooter who killed Taylor, was sentenced to 57 years in prison. A jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and armed burglary. Because he was 17 at the time of the killing, he was initially charged with first-degree murder. He was not a candidate for the death penalty.
Several Rivera family members pleaded for mercy, but the suspect lied in his testimony. He’ll be spending the rest of the day with his life behind bars.
Sean Taylor’s career in the NFL
