Scam Alert: Placer and Sacramento County Residents Warned of Car Buying Scam

A Placer County citizen recently fell victim to a scam that authorities say is spreading throughout California.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reports that the scam involves a person attempting to sell their automobile.

According to deputies, the process begins when a car vendor (victim) is approached by a buyer (scammer) who arranges a meeting.

Modus Operandi: Exposing the Deceptive Tactics

The fraud begins with an apparently benign transaction between the seller and the buyer.

Meetings are scheduled frequently in public settings such as the Raley’s lot off Lincoln Way or at the seller’s home in Auburn.

However, what starts as a simple vehicle inspection turns sinister.

While one fraudster converses with the seller, others secretly tamper with the vehicle, pouring oil into crucial sections like the radiator and engine.
