SAN FRANCISCO – A fisherman captured a video of a great white shark swimming in San Francisco Bay.
This week’s cell phone video shows the giant shark close to the Golden Gate Bridge.
On Thursday, David Lukito told KTVU that it was a close call he will never forget.
“The shark was nearly 20 feet long,” he said. “It was about the size of my boat. I’m on a 19-foot boat, and it was sizing up.”
A local marine biologist examined the video closely and confirmed it was a great white shark.
“That’s a white shark in front of San Francisco Bay, which is more common than people think,” said Shark Stewards founder David McGuire. “We know from tagging data and anecdotal reports that white sharks come into the bay and will frequently go to the backside as deep as the Richmond bridge.”
According to McGuire, great whites usually come into the bay searching for prey, but it’s not an ideal habitat.
