A 45-year-old Marlton man is facing homicide charges after allegedly killing a well-known Mount Laurel restaurant owner while driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the authorities.
According to Mount Laurel Police Chief Stephen Riedener and Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw, Desmond Newberry was also charged with narcotics possession and aggravated manslaughter.
The Mount Laurel Police Department sent officers to Hainesport Road near the Cucina Carini restaurant on September 3 in response to a report of a car accident shortly after 8 o’clock in the evening.
The 52-year-old restaurant owner Glenn Keen was struck broadside by a westbound car being driven by the defendant, according to the inquiry, as he was pulling out of the parking lot into Hainesport Road.
Before the police arrived, citizens helped Keen get out of his car. Keen was then flown to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he subsequently passed away. The Mount Laurel Fire Department helped Newberry escape his car, and he was then driven to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
According to the prosecution, a warrant was obtained to provide investigators access to the event data recorder from Newberry’s BMW, which proved that he was going at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour just prior to colliding with Keen’s Ford SUV.
After turning himself into authorities on Monday, Nov. 7, Newberry was being held at the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly.
