Proprietor & Gamble Co. announced that it was recalling some Old Spice and Secret antiperspirant sprays after the product was found to contain benzene, a cancer-causing substance.
The company has advised retailers that they can no longer sell the sprays and asked them and other owners to throw them away.
In total, 18 products are affected, which include eight Old Spice items and ten Secret sprays that expire in September 2023.
Customers who purchased the products on the Old Spice and Secret websites were qualified to apply for reimbursement.
According to the company, “daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”
According to Procter & Gamble, its other antiperspirants, deodorants, and solid stick antiperspirants were not affected by the recall, and consumers could continue using them as usual.

In addition, the company states that it “has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall and is conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution.”
In humans, benzene can cause cancer according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Benzene, in particular, can cause leukemia via long-term exposure.
Johnson & Johnson, which owns Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreen products, also recalled five aerosol sunscreen products earlier this year after discovering benzene levels were low.
