‘Mother of Englewood’ Offers Safe Trick-or-Treating Option

Children are too terrified to trick-or-treat on their own blocks in certain Chicago communities. But this year, the so-called “Mother of Englewood” is providing a solution for the third year in a row. As Latanya Johnson put it, “making sure that our kids have a safe area in the community to be able to do what other kids do in their community.”

In order to start an afterschool program for children in Englewood nine years ago, Johnson utilized her own funds. She began a Halloween tradition three years ago. Even adults dressed up, she noted. Having the kids trick-or-treat within their own neighborhood was fantastic.

On Halloween, from 2 to 5 p.m., trick-or-treating will take place on Ashland from 59th to 63rd. Business owners, law enforcement personnel, and firefighters will all be throwing out candy.
