Miraculous Escape: Teen Falls 250 Feet From Big Sur Cliff And Lives
Following a 250-foot fall off a route in California’s Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur, a hiker was saved on January 4, according to officials.
The California Highway Patrol’s Coastal Division Air Operations reports that the 19-year-old Atascadero resident fell from a cliff while walking the Pine Ridge Trail close to the Sykes Campground. Right around 4:30 p.m., he failed.
After sundown, a search-and-rescue squad on foot located the adolescent after his hiking partner contacted 911, according to CHP. The hiker was unable to return to the road due to severe but non-life-threatening injuries.
When rescuers requested air support, a CHP helicopter showed up the following morning. The hiker was seen being lifted into the chopper in the video that the CHP released.
The hiker was transported by air ambulance to Natividad Hospital in Salinas after being flown to a nearby landing zone.
Regarding rescues on the Pine Ridge Trail, CHP spokesperson Saul Lopez stated, “These incidents are unusual, but they do happen.”
China Camp and Big Sur Station are connected via the 23-mile Pine Ridge Trail, which stretches across the Ventana Wilderness and Tassajara Road. It traverses rugged terrain, climbing and descending steep mountain slopes.
The U.S. Forest Service states that “the hike up the Pine Ridge Trail into the Ventana Wilderness is strenuous and challenging even for experienced hikers.”
