Micron will Invest $15 Billion in a New Fab in Idaho, Bringing Cutting-Edge Memory Production to the United States.
An estimated 17,000 new jobs for Americans will be created by the first new memory fab in the country in 20 years.
In order to build a new fab for cutting-edge memory manufacturing in Boise, Idaho, Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), one of the biggest semiconductor companies in the world and the only one based in the United States, today announced plans to invest roughly $15 billion through the end of the decade.
This will be the first brand-new memory manufacturing facility to be constructed in the United States in 20 years. It ensures domestic supply of cutting-edge memory needed for market segments like automotive and data centre, driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence and 5G that is accelerating.
Following the passing of the CHIPS and Science Act, Micron has many other planned U.S. investments.
This one is the first of such investments, and it constitutes the biggest private investment ever made in Idaho. The new production facility will be next to Micron’s research and development facility.
This will speed up time to market, improve operating efficiency, and make it easier for people to use new technologies.
Thanks to the CHIPS and Science Act’s projected federal funds and credits, as well as the incentives offered by the state of Idaho and the governor’s backing, the new fab will create more than 17,000 new American jobs by the end of the decade, including around 2,000 direct Micron positions.
Sanjay Mehrotra, president and CEO of Micron, said: “We applaud President Biden, Secretary of Commerce Raimondo, Secretary of Defense Austin, the Biden-Harris Administration, and members of Congress for the bipartisan support of the CHIPS and Science Act, which made this investment choice possible.”

Our brand-new state-of-the-art memory manufacturing facility will support U.S. technological leadership by maintaining a steady domestic semiconductor supply, which is essential to both the economy and national security.
We also value the assistance provided by Governor Little and his team, the Idaho state legislature, Mayor McLean, and our colleagues at Idaho Power.
As the headquarters of Micron and the site of our invention for more than 40 years, Boise is home to more than 6,000 of our workers, and we are pleased with the beneficial effect this investment will have on the region.
Micron will enhance funding for K–12 STEM education programmes. It puts more emphasis on attracting underrepresented and rural student groups as part of the company’s continued commitment to engage in the Idaho community and strengthen our workforce.
Additionally, Micron will strengthen its collaborations with organisations in Idaho, colleges around the country with reputable programmes in semiconductor engineering and research; minority-serving institutions (MSIs), and veteran transition programmes.

Locally, Micron is also happy to share that it has partnered with the College of Western Idaho to take the lead in teaching essential courses, such as Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology, to get students ready for the Micron Technician Apprenticeship Program.
The business anticipates opening a top-notch childcare centre at the Treasure Valley Family YMCA, run by our neighbourhood partners, to assist Micron’s expanding workforce.
The facility, which is adjacent to Micron’s corporate offices, will provide STEM-based programmes, make it simple for parents to spend time with their kids throughout the day, and smooth the transition for those—particularly mothers—returning to the workforce.
The announcement today is part of Micron’s plan to invest more than $150 billion in manufacturing and R&D over the next ten years, including a $40 billion investment through the end of this decade to build cutting-edge memory manufacturing in the United States in stages based on long-term industry demand trends.
