Law enforcement officials issued a notice late on Wednesday identifying a person of interest, 40-year-old Robert Card of Bowdoin, even though the culprit has not yet been identified.
According to a state police report, Card, a military-trained firearms instructor, was recently admitted to a mental health facility. Chief Justice commentator Jonathan Dienst of law enforcement, stated that authorities think they know the identity of the shooter and the car he is driving.
The sources stated that although the suspect, who has not yet been named in public, may have a criminal history, a motivation has not yet been revealed.
Images provided by Lewiston police show a man carrying an assault-style weapon as he enters a bowling facility while wearing blue jeans and a brown shirt.
They also posted a picture of a white car with what seems to be a black front bumper.
Wednesday night, a shelter-in-place order was in effect for the entirety of Androscoggin County, which is located in southwest Maine, north of Portland and southwest of the state capital, Augusta. All Lewiston area schools, including Bates College, were closed.
The governor of Maine and other officials were appalled by the shooting.
