Following a deadly collision near Snake River High School earlier this month, a Blackfoot man was taken into custody this week on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving without permission, according to the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Marco D. Cuevas, 24, is being held at the Bingham County Jail in Blackfoot on $250,000 bond for causing the crash that left Jesus Ortiz, 17, of Blackfoot, dead, authorities said.
When Cuevas’ GMC pickup truck, carrying Ortiz as a passenger, collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck near the crossroads of Highway 39 and 900 West on October 14, approximately eight miles west of Blackfoot, investigators reported.
Witnesses, according to sheriff’s deputies, stated that Cuevas was traveling south on 900 West when he struck the eastbound Chevrolet pickup on Highway 39 after failing to yield at the stop sign.
Following their ejection from the vehicle during the collision, Cuevas and Ortiz were driven to Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot by Blackfoot Fire Department ambulances.
The sheriff’s office reported that Ortiz passed away in the hospital while Cuevas received treatment for his wounds and was eventually released.

According to the sheriff’s office, the adult male in the Chevrolet pickup truck was driven by a private car to Bingham Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor wounds. His identity remains undisclosed.
Beer cans were discovered inside the GMC pickup, leading authorities to surmise that drinking had a role in the collision.
The sheriff’s office stated on Friday that Cuevas’ blood alcohol content at the time of the crash is unknown since the results of his blood test are still pending.
For over two hours, the collision blocked traffic at the crossroads of Highway 39 and 900 West.
