SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities have identified a San Diego couple. An out-of-towner killed in a head-on collision on a Mission Beach thoroughfare.
According to the Medical Examiner‘s Office, the triple-fatality collision occurred around 3 p.m. Saturday. After 62-year-old Andrew Small of San Diego slumped over the wheel of the Ford EcoSport. He was driving on Mission Boulevard near Belmont Park.
According to the county agency, the southbound vehicle ended up on the northbound side of the street, colliding at high speed with an oncoming Kia Sportage.
Minor died at the accident scene from blunt-force trauma, as did a backseat passenger in the Kia, 59-year-old Suzanne Thompson of Henderson, Nevada.
Mary Small, Small’s 70-year-old wife, riding beside him in the Ford, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and died of her injuries Monday afternoon.
Minor injuries were sustained by the couple’s companion and two other passengers in the Kia.
It was unclear what caused Andrew Small to become incapacitated behind the wheel of his SUV. According to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department, intoxication was not a factor in the accident.
