Accused Pregnant Teen Killer Indicted On Capital Murder Charges

A Houston County grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing a pregnant 19-year-old from Jackson County earlier this year.

According to court records, Marquis McCloud was charged on Tuesday, October 17, with one crime of capital murder—kidnapping—and one count of capital murder—two or more persons—in connection with the deaths of Anastasia Gilley, 19, and her unborn child, 4 months.

On Wednesday, May 3, Gilley vanished from her Jackson County residence. Her severely decomposed body was discovered early on Wednesday, May 10, in a Houston County field following a week-long search.

Sheriff Donald Valenza of Houston County claims that although Gilley may have willingly gone to see McCoud after chatting with him, at some point during their meeting, he started holding her against her will and shot her dead in a field off of Headland Avenue.

McCloud was previously detained during the missing person’s investigation because he was suspected of breaking his parole by traveling to Florida.

Sheriff Valenza claims that following McCloud’s initial detention, investigators learned the two had been communicating and tried to question him on Gilley’s disappearance, but he refused to cooperate.

Sheriff Valenza stated that McCloud was charged with one count of capital murder-kidnapping and then with capital murder-two or more persons after investigators found Gilley’s body and her relationship to him.

If found guilty of the Capital Murder charges, McCloud could receive the death sentence or life in prison. Russ Goodman, the district attorney for Houston County, informed in May that he will pursue the death penalty.
