Homicide Accused Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charge

Judge Milton Lee of the DC Superior Court approved a defendant’s choice to accept a plea deal from the prosecution in a 2016 murder case on October 28.

Ivy Tonnet Smith, 39, was shot by Xavier Hamilton, 30, who was then charged with second-degree murder while armed.

The Metropolitan Police Department was summoned to the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue, SE, on March 6, 2016, according to court records. Ivy Smith was an innocent spectator at the neighbourhood bus stop when she was shot.

Smith was sent to Washington Hospital Center, where doctors subsequently declared her dead. At a nearby beauty supply shop, another person with a gunshot wound was discovered.

As he pleaded guilty to voluntary homicide while armed, Hamilton gave up his rights. Hamilton will spend eight years behind bars and three years of closely monitored probation.

The next hearing is scheduled for December 16.
