Harris County to Introduce $500 Monthly Support Program

Harris County is launching a program named “Uplift Harris” to assist low-income families. They will shortly launch a website where anyone in need of assistance can join up. In June, county officials agreed to this strategy.

It will receive $20.5 million from the American Rescue Plan. Harris County will be the first in Texas to implement such a large-scale initiative. Do you want more information? Continue reading.

Harris County, home of Houston, is about to launch a guaranteed income program. Nearly 2,000 low-income residents will receive $500 a month for 18 months.

What is Uplift Harris?

Uplift Harris is a program that gives $500 every month for a year and a half to about 1,928 people in Harris County.

It’s meant to help families with things like rent, food, transportation, housing, utilities, and healthcare. Some other places like Chicago and Los Angeles have similar programs.

Who Can Get It?

The program will give money to areas in Harris County where people have less money.

They’re focusing on neighborhoods like Forest Acres, Acres Homes, South Park, East Six Jensen, Sunnyside, Northgate, Greater Fifth Ward, Settegast, Gulfton, and Galena Park.

If you live in certain zip codes and your income is low (like $29,160 for one person or $60,000 for a family of four), you can apply if you’re 18 or older.

How to Apply?

Starting from January 8 to January 26, 2024, you can apply online. There’s a form to fill out about yourself. They’ll ask for your ID, birth date, and maybe a picture to make sure it’s you. Only one person per home can apply.

When Does It Start?

If you apply and get chosen, they’ll tell you by mid-February. The $500 will be sent every month starting from March or April 2024.

The Public Health Department will run the program, and the money will be given through direct deposit or a special card. Some groups will manage the money, and someone else will check if this helps people.

What Can I Use the Money For?

You can spend the money on what you need, like household things. But there are rules: no illegal stuff or helping bad things. The money isn’t taxed, and it’s like a gift from a charity according to the IRS.
