Greg Abbott: Funding From the Texas Rent Relief Program Will Go Directly to Texans in Need of Rent and Utility Assistance

Governor Greg Abbott announced today that the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) has allocated over 95 percent of the total monies available under the Texas Rent Relief Program to Texans who applied for help.

This program has served more households and provided more relief funds than any other state while reaching more than 98 percent of the state’s counties.

Texas was the first state to distribute $1 billion in rent relief funds, and the state’s program has served more households and provided more relief funds than any other state.

After that, the agency will inform the remaining applicants about their application status, next steps, and further resources that may be available to them for rental help.

It is anticipated that the remainder of the monies will be pledged and disbursed in the new year. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) stopped its application process for the Texas Rent Relief program in November because of numerous requests for help exceeding the amount of cash available.

Hundreds of thousands of Texans have benefited from the Texas Rent Relief program, and I commend the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for ensuring that these funds were disbursed as quickly as possible to those who needed it the most, said Governor Abbott.

In the meantime, as the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs commits and disburses the remaining funds of the program, I encourage Texans who are still in need of assistance to visit the Texas Rent Relief program website to learn about other possible rent and utility resources throughout the state.”

In February 2021, Governor Abbott and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) introduced the Texas Rent Relief program, which was the first statewide rent and utility assistance program for qualifying households throughout Texas.

As of Friday, approximately $2 billion had been given under the program, with more than 300,000 Texan households having received assistance or being processed for final payment.
