While he’s known as “DeathSantis” to his dismissive liberal critics, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis noted on Wednesday that he and his supporters live in a part of America that is least afflicted by COVID-19.
In a press release, DeSantis pointed out that Florida has achieved the lowest daily average virus case rate in the nation.
His claim was based on The New York Times COVID database.

The Times statistics show that Florida has had 9 new infections per 100,000 people per day over the last seven days.
That tied Florida with Hawaii as the nation’s lowest infection rate.
Florida’s rate is about 40 percent to 50 percent below such blue-state darlings as California, New Jersey, New York, and Illinois.
The overall number of new cases in Florida for most of mid-August was over 20,000 a day, based on the seven-day average.
According to the Times, the state weekly average reached a record 29,711 on Aug. 16.
As of Wednesday, the state had 1,863 cases.
“Without mandates or lockdowns, COVID-19 cases in Florida have decreased 90% since August,” DeSantis said in a statement.
“In addition to cases, hospitalizations have plummeted in our state. This has been accomplished by making monoclonal antibody treatments and vaccines widely available throughout our state while protecting Floridians from government overreach.”
In the corporate media, DeSantis was slammed for months, as he refused to mask and lock down his state for months on end – despite the fact that his district was home to more ageing groups than half of the states combined.
According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida’s death rate per capita now equals states like Pennsylvania and Nevada, and its death rate on a daily basis is similar to that of California.
However, a report by Yahoo news demonstrated how the media is also seeing things differently following Colin Powell’s death from COVID, having been covered fully vaccinated.
“Did DeSantis ‘do’ anything to improve Florida’s COVID numbers? And does the state’s 180-degree turn somehow prove that more cautious policies ‘provide no benefits?” Yahoo asks rhetorically.
“The answer is no.”
Also, Yahoo noted that COVID occurs in a pattern that does not depend on other variables.
“It’s doubtful even DeSantis himself would claim he’s the reason Florida is recording so many fewer COVID cases today than in August. The virus, we’ve known for some time, comes in waves — waves that ascend, peak and ultimately recede on a remarkably consistent timeline.”
“Epidemiologists aren’t sure why COVID seems to come and go in two-month intervals,” the article continued.
“One day, experts predict, SARS-CoV-2 will become endemic, spreading seasonally around the globe in ever-evolving variations that might make a lot of people feel ill for a few days but are ultimately much less damaging and deadly because everybody has some degree of immunity through vaccination or prior infection. At that point, mask mandates and vaccine passports will be more trouble than they’re worth.”
