Federal Holiday May Affect SNAP Benefits this December

In most states, by experience, regardless of weekend or holiday, SNAP benefits are deposited on the same day each month. There are chances that the SNAP date might be delayed because of the holiday depending on the state you live in the US.

Hence the need to check when SNAP will be paid by the state; the Christmas and New Year holidays are almost on us.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

In the United States, everyone knows SNAP by a lot of names according to the state you live in; California calls it CalFresh, Alabama calls it Food Assistance Program, Georgis calls it Georgia Food Stamp Program, Arizona calls it Nutrition Assistance. SNAP in the United State is an acronym for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

According to 2019 data by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, California had 3,789,000 participants which were the highest, Florida had 2,847,000, Illinois had 1,770,000, Georgia had 1,424,000, and the state with the least participant was Alaska with 85,000 SNAP participants.

Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards

It was initially Food stamps, but it’s now called Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards; SNAP load your EBT card with money every month; you take the card to retailers like the farmers market and grocery stores to purchase food.

You can only use the EBT Cards for the purchase of fruits and vegetables,  non-alcoholic beverages, snack foods, meat, fish and poultry, bread and cereals, and dairy products.

You cannot purchase Hygiene items and cosmetics, Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco, most live animals, hot foods, pet foods, cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household supplies, vitamins, medicines, and supplements.

Eligibility

Not everyone is eligible to own an EBT card, to be eligible, household income should be at 130% or below; a household may have members who are 60+ of age, have a disability, have $3,750 or less in assets.

If a household is without 60+ persons or disability then the member must own assets worth $2500 or less. If you are on strike, unauthorized immigrants, part-time college students, and certain lawfully present immigrants are ineligible for SNAP benefits.

How to Check When SNAP Pay will Come?

The days SNAP benefits are paid differs by state; In Michigan for example, benefits are paid out from the 3rd until the 21st of the month, bypassing both issues that might arise due to Christmas and New Year’s holidays, but in New York, the actual dates change monthly, so NYC publishes a six-month schedule with exact dates.
