Fact Check: Have Additional Stimulus Payments Been Due Since January 19?

Social Media Controversy: Jan. 19 was the deadline for stimulus checks worth $2,000. Before stating the fact, it can be recalled the controversial statement was deemed false by Political Fact.

On Jan. 19, false claims were made about receiving $2,000 stimulus checks on Facebook.

“$2000 January 19th – STIMULUS CHECK DELIVERY DATE!” is the caption on a Facebook video. The hashtag “#stimuluscheckupdate2022” appears as well, Editorials24 reported.

The video posted on Facebook didn’t mention the economic stimulus payments that are available to all eligible Americans.

Nonetheless, the video shared on Facebook was marked as part of efforts by the social media leading platform to combat false news and misinformation in its News Feed.

Three totaling payments of $3,200 have been made to eligible Americans: a $1,200 payment in April 2020, a $600 payment in December 2020 or January 2021, and a $1,400 payment in March 2021.

In order to stimulate the economy, the federal government is provided these payments.

Meanwhile, there have been discussions of a fourth stimulus payment, but no payment has yet been made.

As reported by CBS News on Feb. 1, the Biden administration has emphasized infrastructure spending, and some economists are of the opinion that previous stimulus payments have contributed to inflation.

According to a senior fellow of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, a think tank based in Washington, D.C., disclosed after monitoring federal economic policy that there will be no more stimulus payments

To cement the point here, Congress has not approved an additional stimulus payment this type around, according to Janet Holtzblatt.

State governments, like California and Maine, have recently distributed or plan to distribute stimulus payments despite no immediate plans from the federal level.

A December report by USA Today noted that each state has its own set of eligibility requirements.

Residents of Arizona who return to work could receive a one-time payment of $2,000 from the state.

And according to CNBC’s report in January, funds must be distributed according to various criteria, including paid sick leave or family leave.

Another payment to Americans, the Child Tax Credit, is also not returning.

At a press conference on January 19, Biden said it was unclear whether the legislation would be included in Build Back Better.

The IRS stated that you may still be eligible to claim this credit if your child was born in 2021 but you did not receive it.

Final Note

A fourth stimulus check has not been authorized by Congress amid the pandemic.

No stimulus payments were distributed on Jan. 19, and it does not appear that they will be distributed anytime soon.

As such, we conclude the statement on Facebook is false.
