Kristina Tirloni, a senior communications adviser for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, says the state’s homeowner assistance fund is available to help eligible homeowners with past-due mortgage payments, property taxes and insurance, and delinquent homeowner association and condo association fees.
As a result of the pandemic, the federal government’s American Rescue Plan Act donated money to Texas, according to Tirloni. As long as the money in the fund lasts, which is now set to expire on December 31st, 2026, the fund will provide assistance to those in need.
Montgomery County officials issued a press statement on March 15 announcing a new initiative to aid homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments due to the epidemic to avoid foreclosure.
Tirloni stated that there are two types of relief money available to households that qualify for assistance. Past-due mortgage payments can be eligible for up to $40,000 in relief grants for qualifying homeowners.
Eligible homeowners who have fallen behind on their property taxes, insurance, or association dues are also eligible for a lump sum payment of up to $25,000.
In an interview, Tirloni remarked, “If you need assistance and you need it now, we encourage you to apply.”
While mortgage payments are taking 30 days or more to be transferred to past-due accounts, Tirloni reported that property taxes and insurance monies are now arriving more rapidly. According to a March 15 Montgomery County press release, the funds are a grant and do not need to be repaid.
TDHCA will send a check for outstanding taxes to my office if a homeowner qualifies for the program, according to Tammy McRae, Montgomery County tax assessor-collector, in a March 15 press release. “It’s not a loan; it’s a grant. All homeowners who are eligible and whose taxes are unpaid are encouraged to apply.”
According to the TDHCA’s website, anyone who owns and occupies a home in Texas who is enduring financial difficulties due to the epidemic is eligible for assistance.
A toll-free telephone number, 833-651-3874, is available if you need help completing the application or have any concerns.
