As Bloomberg News reported on Saturday, a coronavirus strain has been found in Cyprus that mixes the delta and omicron variants.
According to Bloomberg, an omicron-like genetic signature in the delta genome was dubbed “deltacron” by University of Cyprus biology professor Leondios Kostrikis.
According to the study, Kostrikis and his colleagues have detected 25 cases of the infection. It’s too early to say if the strain is spreading or if it will have any long-term effects.
According to Kostrikis, “We’ll see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more communicable or whether it will dominate” over the two main strains, delta, and omicron, in an interview on Sigma TV Friday. As for deltacron, he thinks omicron will also overcome it.
According to Bloomberg, the researchers reported their findings to the international viral database GISAID this week.
Deltacron is the latest Covid-19 variation to emerge as omicron continues its global expansion, causing an increase in the number of cases. According to a CNBC review of data from Johns Hopkins University, the United States is reporting an average of more than 600,000 new cases every day for the past seven days. That’s a 72% increase from the previous week and a pandemic record.
