Two brothers from Cook County are facing federal charges for allegedly stealing over $1 million on Halloween from an armored vehicle and an ATM in a Chicago neighborhood.
An indictment was returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago charging Corrie Singleton, 21, Darrell Singleton, 18, and a juvenile with robbery, bank larceny by force, and firearm violations.
The indictment alleges that on the morning of October 31, a Brink’s security courier was robbed while restocking an ATM at a Chase Bank branch in the 16700 block of Torrence Ave. in Lansing.
Federal prosecutors say the trio used firearms to rob the courier of a gun and a bag of cash, as well as the ATM of its contents.
Prosecutors say the robbers forced the courier inside the armored truck and demanded that she use her fingerprints to unlock the truck’s inner compartments, where they found the cash hidden in colored plastic bags.
The bandits made off with an estimated $1,204,132, including $121,824 from the courier and ATM and $904,132 from the armored vehicle.
Thieves escaped the scene in a white Dodge Charger and headed south on Torrence Avenue as police gave chase.
Before crashing into another car and fleeing on foot near the I-80 onramp, police officers made several stops at the scene.
According to the indictment, most of the stolen money was recovered from the vehicle, and both Corrie Singleton and the minor were detained.
Prosecutors say an arrest warrant has been issued for Darrell Singleton after he evaded capture.
Corrie Singleton was taken back to the bank after his arrest, and the courier positively identified him based on his attire, as stated in the criminal complaint.
The arraignment for Corrie Singleton in federal court has been scheduled for December 15.
The case against the minor will be heard in state court.
