Charges Mount In El Paso Tragedy

Recently, the El Paso Police Department updated the community on a horrific event that took place last Saturday, resulting in three fatalities and three injuries. Carlos Alejandro Martinez has been arrested in connection with three separate homicides.

EPPD said the crash happened because a car tried to speed past a police checkpoint. The crossroads of 700 South Americas and 700 South Zaragoza was the scene of the crime.

A police car on Loop 375 Eastbound at the Padres flyover spotted a speeding vehicle, according to the Special Traffic Investigators’ report. Officer Carlos Alejandro Martinez, 21, of Horizon, Texas, attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, who he later identified as himself, sped away.

The police officer opted to end the traffic stop because of Martinez’s rapid speed. The driver sped off the Zaragoza off-ramp, ran a red light, and slammed into a number of other vehicles.

The force of the collision set fire to one of the cars, trapping its passengers inside. A 2008 Tan Mazda Tribute was involved in a fatal accident, taking the lives of all five people inside.

A 31-year-old female driver and her two passengers, a 27-year-old female and a young girl of 8 years old. Until the next of kin of one of the passengers is notified, we cannot reveal who has perished.

When Martinez, the driver of the fleeing vehicle, disobeyed the officer’s orders, the officer had to resort to using his taser on him. Injured passengers from the fleeing vehicle included Martinez, who was eventually hospitalized.

Jasmin Rodriguez, 29, from Illinois, was driving a 2017 blue Chevrolet Malibu, and Victor Arnoldo Cardenas, 31, from El Paso, was behind the wheel of a 2017 silver Toyota Tundra.

After the accident, Martinez was charged with three charges of murder and given a $3,000,000 bond. Additionally, he is being held on a $500,000 bond for charges of Causing Death and Evading Arrest/Detention.

Judge Reyes approved the warrants, and Martinez will be detained after his doctor gives him the all-clear. The Special Traffic Investigations team is working hard to collect evidence and analyze the crash situation completely.

The 57th, 58th, and 59th traffic-related fatalities of the year have occurred as a result of this accident, a moderate increase from the 55 fatalities recorded at this time last year.
