Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner and her teammates were involved in an “inappropriate and unfortunate” incident on Saturday at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the WNBA stated in a statement.
“As we gather additional information about today’s incident at the Dallas Airport, it has come to our attention that this was orchestrated by a social media figure and provocateur. His actions were inappropriate and unfortunate,” the WNBA said, without elaborating upon the identity of the social media personality.
An “incident took place” at the airport, according to Phoenix Mercury.
Although far-right activist Alex Stein posted a video on Twitter in response to the WNBA’s announcement, showing him accosting Griner at an airport, the specifics of the event were not immediately evident.
In the footage, Stein can be heard yelling, “She hates America,” as the WNBA All-Star passes past.
In a retweet of the video, Griner’s agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas wrote: “One of the saddest, most pathetic ironies here is this man, threatening women in an airport for clicks, is in fact, doing his best Putin impression by trying to sow racial and political divide between Americans.”

The event occurred just over a year after Griner was incarcerated for ten months on drug-related charges after being apprehended at a Moscow airport. During a prisoner swap in the United Arab Emirates in December, she was released.
Brianna Turner, a forward with the Phoenix Mercury, claimed on Saturday that there had been “excessive harassment” while the team was traveling.
“Player safety while traveling should be at the forefront. People following with cameras saying wild remarks is never acceptable,” Turner wrote on Twitter, adding, “Our team nervously huddled in a corner unsure how to move about.”
Colas attributed the event to Griner and other WNBA players‘ support of a “better, more inclusive, and less divided America.”
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association, the union for WNBA players, stated in a statement that the incident at the airport was a “calculated confrontation” that left Griner and her teammates feeling “very unsafe.”

The Bring Our Families Home campaign, an advocacy group that supports American hostages and detainees, tweeted its support for Griner.
“What happened today is unacceptable and especially when targeted towards a former hostage and wrongful detainee,” the campaign wrote.
