In Georgia, where there will be a U.S. Senate runoff later this month, early voting appears to occur on a Saturday.
A judge for Fulton County Superior Court determined on Friday that it is acceptable. Legal to hold early voting on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
Early voting will take place on Saturday, November 26. According to information released by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office shortly. After the November 8 election that forced Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker into a runoff.
Raffensperger later asserted that early voting on that day would be against a state law that forbids runoff elections on any day that follows a state holiday. In addition to Thursday, November 24, being Thanksgiving Day, the following day, November 25, is a state holiday.
The Warnock campaign filed a lawsuit to get Raffensperger’s decision overturned, and it won on Friday.
According to Quentin Fulks, Warnock’s campaign manager, Allowing early voting on Saturdays is a win for all Georgia voters, especially for workers and students who will have more opportunities to have their voices heard in this election. We eagerly await county announcements confirming that they will allow Georgians to cast their ballots on November 26.”
After the general election, Walker trailed Warnock by a small margin, but neither had received the votes needed by state law to avoid a runoff. The winner will be chosen on December 6 by Georgia voters.
