The 64-year-old man who was killed on Saturday afternoon at the Metra station in Deerfield after being hit by a freight train has been identified by the coroner.
According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Robert Pighetti, 64, of Deerfield, died from blunt force injuries, as revealed by an autopsy conducted on Monday.
At around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District, the Metra Police Department, and the Deerfield Police Department all responded to the Metra station located at 860 Deerfield Road in Deerfield.

According to the responding cops, Pighetti was hit by the train and was declared dead at the site. The rail tracks were closed right away.
The pedestrian may have purposefully jumped in front of a freight train, according to train crew reports. It remained unclear on Tuesday, according to the coroner’s office, whether Pighetti’s death was an accident or deliberate.
Metra reported at 3:35 p.m. on Saturday that the incident had caused both inbound and outbound Milwaukee District North Line trains to be stopped close to Lake Cook Road.

The situation, which was right at the train station between the two tracks, was reported to and attended by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
At 4:18 p.m., Metra released an update stating that there were reported significant delays and that all Metra trains were still stopped.
At 5:17 p.m., Metra reported that both the inbound and outgoing trains were operating again, albeit with significant delays.
The train crossings at Osterman Avenue, Hazel Avenue, and Greenwood Avenue were closed for several hours, according to the Deerfield Police Department. The event is being looked at by the Canadian Pacific Police Service and the Metra Police Department.
