These rescues take place as a number of beaches in northern California implement a beach hazard. Although the sea may appear calm at first, a sneaker wave can suddenly erupt and sweep people and animals out to sea, according to the National Weather Service.
Visitors visiting the beach are warned to avoid the ocean and to avoid jetties and rocks.
It is advised by authorities to “never” turn your back to the ocean. The warning began on Friday night and will last until Sunday morning. Due to high tides, there is also a flood advisory in place.
