5 Killed in South Georgia Highway Tragedy on Thanksgiving

Five people and a child were killed when their van crashed into a pickup truck on a south Georgia state highway near Moultrie on Thursday afternoon.

State police said that the driver of the pickup truck and four other people in the van were seriously hurt. It took a chopper to get them to hospitals in Tallahassee and Thomasville, Florida.

Police say the Ford van and a Dodge Ram truck crashed into each other head-on on Georgia 111, about 8 miles southwest of Moultrie. The pickup truck was going north on the two-lane highway, while the van was going south.

Police in Colquitt County said Friday that the van was carrying a mix of adults and children who were going to a Thanksgiving event.

Have a look at some of the accident news:

Emiliano Martinez Ramon, 58; Anna Leticia Rodriquez, 61; Jose Moreno, 72; Herlinda Sel-Choc, 25; and Anderson Arial Sel, 3 were named by Brock as the people who died. Brock thought that Sel’s mother, Sel-Choc, might be one of the older people, but he wasn’t sure.

“Over the years, I’ve seen several things, but this was a horrendous accident,” Brock told WMAZ-TV. “There’s no question about it. It’s a miracle that anyone survived.”

Georgia state police say 14 people died on the state’s roads on Thanksgiving. Two people were killed late Thursday night on I-16 near East Dublin when a Nissan Altima going east in the wrong way hit a Honda Pilot going west.

Nathan Stanley, the coroner for Laurens County, says that both people died before they could be taken to the hospital. April Jones from Dublin was one of the victims. The name of the second victim has not been made public yet.
