2 Children Died in Hillside Collapse Along Northern California River

Two children died when a hillside crumbled beside a river in Northern California following a series of winter storms.

According to a statement from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, the two victims were entangled in the rubble and tumbled down the hillside Thursday morning near an off-highway vehicle recreation area downstream from Shasta Dam.

The juveniles’ names were not immediately published.

Numerous first responders, including the sheriff’s dive team, went to the area at 9 a.m., around 200 miles (322 kilometers) north of San Francisco, according to the statement.

Dam managers briefly stopped water release from the dam, and both victims were discovered in rubble. According to sheriff’s spokesperson Tim Mapes, one person may have been half submerged in water.

Both were pronounced deceased on the scene. “It just is an absolutely tragic incident,” Mapes said. “We offer our condolences.”
